Description

According to ancient tradition, Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, sea monsters whose gaze had the power to petrify anyone who looked directly into her eyes. The three sisters, daughters of the marine gods Forco and Ceto, represented the perversion in its three forms: Medusa – the only one not to be immortal among the three – the intellectual perversion, Euriale the sexual one, and Steno the moral one. But Medusa would have been originally a beautiful woman, transformed into a monster by the goddess Athena to punish her for lying with Poseidon in one of her temples.
The tangle of snakes instead of hair that characterizes the representations of Medusa in the history of art finds in Versace’s icon a new elegance and a new composure, perhaps inspired by sculptures of the classical Greek era. The myth of the Medusa has always struck the imagination of Gianni Versace, who chose it as the brand name for his fashion house and who describes it as follows “If you look at her you can no longer detach yourself from her, Medusa is seduction”.
